What your prayers have wrought . . .

I knew Aaron was hoping to attending church yesterday.  He wanted to go to his Bishopric meeting and then if he felt up to it, attend Sacrament Meeting.  Lorraine was a little worried it would be too much.  He has felt better since taking himself off the pain medication.  And the best thing about that is that his pain has been minor.  This is quite an improvement from not so long ago when he went all night and the next morning without his pain medication because he had run out and Lorraine was trying desperately to get him more.  He was miserable then.  We are so grateful for the improvement.  The lessening of the pain must mean the tumors are having less sway on his body.  I’m sure those pain pills were also contributing to his being so tired and sleeping so much.  He has been up and about since being off them.  He ended up attending the Bishopric meeting, then coming home for a rest and going back to Sacrament meeting.

In the afternoon Lorraine kept texting me pictures of the family on a little walk feeding ducks.  I don’t remember when photos have brought such joy.  Aaron was outside with his family enjoying the beautiful sunshine.  I thought you might like to see them as well so they are being posted.

Each picture is a testimony of prayer.  All of those sacred prayers you have been offering are being answered in so many ways; our hearts are lighter as all the dread seems to be lifted, and there is such joy with every improvement we see in Aaron. It is so true that our joy can only be as deep as the sorrow we have felt.  We are so thankful for time given to enjoy each other and share this life together.  Each day is a treasure.  We hope you enjoy this precious day with those you love most.

I was a little concerned to tell you of Aaron’s good day yesterday because so often he seems to have a good one and then there is a setback, so I sent him a text asking how he was doing this morning after such a big day yesterday.  I just received this back from him and am happy to share it with you.

“Hey Mom, it’s my best day yet.  I feel like I have a little spring in my step.  I’m out riding around with sweet Lorraine and Lily right now.  I haven’t used any supplemental oxygen since last night.”

I know the battle isn’t over but perhaps we should take this day to offer prayers of gratitude.  Our petitions to Heaven have been miraculously answered.  I’m sure there will be many days when we will need to ask for more blessings but just for today may our prayers in Aaron’s behalf be prayers of gratitude.  I hope there will be as many of these as there have been prayers asking for favors.  We can send humble, loving, grateful thanks and praise to Him who draws near when we draw near to Him.  I know He will hear these prayers as He has those we have sent filled with need.  And we have an ARMY to send them.

The Battle Begins

As Aaron's family, we think he is the greatest and we know there are many others who feel the same way.  He is a friend to all and sees the best in everyone.  Our Big A is truly one of a kind. Aaron has always been a healthy guy and has never smoked a day in his life.  When he became sick in January, we never dreamed it was anything serious.  Multiple doctors told him it was Bronchitis.  By March, he and Sweet Lorraine knew it was something more serious.  X-rays were alarming and the biopsy showed Adinocarcinoma Lung Cancer. He will soon begin treatment.  He and Lorraine, along with Kaitlin, Maddie, David, Brigham, Ella and Lily are asking for your faith and prayers.

MVP (Most Valuable Patient)

We met with the oncologist yesterday and went over Aaron's PET scan. The prognosis came as no surprise to us. Aaron's symptoms have only intensified over the last two weeks and we knew there could be only one reason why; the cancer was spreading. He has stage 4 papilary lung cancer. It has spread to his hips, part of his spine, rib cage, and some small lymph nodes. Each place Aaron pointed to, on his body where he felt pain, the dr. would look at that area on the scan and we would see a green dot indicating cancer. We are waiting for more results to tell us if this cancer has any genetic markers. There is a 10% chance he has one of them and a 3-4% chance he has the other. If he has one of these markers it means the treatment is more successful. In the meantime, we proceed as if Aaron has neither of these markers present and we begin chemotherapy. He starts on Thursday. Once a week every three weeks for I don't know how long. He also has an appointment with a great lun...

Written by Aaron's Mom and siblings: To all who have loved Aaron throughout his life, we want to let you know that he passed away yesterday, December 18, 2018 in the hospital, surrounded by his family. Sunday night, Aaron took a turn for the worse and was taken to the hospital. We were hopeful that he could regain his strength and come home, but it wasn't to be. Yesterday he interacted lovingly with friends, church leaders, siblings, his Sweet Lorraine, and his children. In true Aaron fashion, and with great effort, he spoke to each person, looking in their eyes, calling them by name or nickname, expressing his love and gratitude in a personal manner to each one.  We wish that all of you who love him could have been there with us yesterday to witness his finest hour. He was the Aaron Thatcher we all love to the last moment, and there was an incredible outpouring from his wonderful soul. Each  felt personally loved and remembered by him. In his suffering, he tutored us ...
